Summer is on! How to protect yourself from sun damage exposure

There are no questions about that summer is one of the happiest seasons of the year! But not taking care of how much sun you get, can really put you down. Sun damage exposure is as harmful as going on vacation and leaving behind your main dress for the perfect family & friends picture.

Unfortunately, not many people know that sun overexposure is the number one factor for pre-mature aging!

As a brand that cares about enjoying a healthy lifestyle, we can’t leave this critical topic away. We have to acknowledge and take action. So let’s start with some interesting facts about sun exposure:

Not Paying Attention to Sun Exposure leads to Sunburn which leads to Photodamage

Photodamage, by definition, is the alteration on the original aspect of the skin, caused by sun exposure that can lead to sunburn. The constant and inappropriate exposure to the sun may cause permanent signs of photodamage. They are also known as melasma, freckles, hyperpigmentation, seborrheic keratosis, and so on.

In a straightforward way to explain all of this is to say that the UV Rays, penetrate in the layers of the skin, causing a series of chemical reactions, disorganizing the fibers of collagen and elastin. This disorganization leads to early signs of wrinkles, crow’s feet and lack of elasticity of the skin.

Important to mention that when we say Ultra Violet (UV) Rays, there are actually two different kinds of UV Rays: UVA and UVB Rays

What are UVA and UVB Rays?

Instead of putting out a lot of scientific words, the length of the waves, if it’s good or bad, let’s be practical here both (UVA and UVB) are harmful to the skin. Period. Both cause the same amount of damage. To make it easy to remember, think about this:

To make it easy to understand, UVA stands to Age and UVB Stands to Burn.

UVA is also known to act silently because it doesn’t cause any pain or any immediate reaction. That’s why many teenagers are careless about sun exposure. The skin during teenage years is fast recovering from any damage. But when we get to the thirties and forties, many times, it’s not fun to see the aftermath acting through the years.

UVB as said, is more immediate, it burns, you feel, depending on the hour of the day or skin color, in a few minutes. Who has never passed through a sunburn? It’s not comfortable at all and besides all of that is the main responsible for playing an evil role, such as skin cancer.

Is photodamage dangerous only for the skin?

Not at all, we have to pay very close attention to the eyes, head, and hands.

In many situations, we could neglect essential parts of the body, imagining that they are free of sun exposure as they are kind of “protected.”

That’s pure illusion. The eyes are as sensitive, if not more when exposed to sunlight. It’s imperative, we all use certified sunglasses, which can protect from UVA and UVB rays.

More recent studies started to point out that HEV rays, also known as Blue Light that they are harmful, especially to the eyes. It may cause macular degeneration leading to permanent eyesight loss.

When looking to our heads, the main concern is to protect from sun overexposure to the skin in the head, usually “protected” by the hair and often, we don’t pass sunblocks on the head. Even though we should as much as do for the rest of the body.

The use of the hat is absolutely imperative in these situations.

Sun Exposure on Hands…

Besides the fact that the hands are considered the most “exposed” part of the body unless we are using gloves. Just think about this situation for a minute. When you are driving, the sunlight that passes through the windshield is harmful to the skin.

Unless you have a certified tinted window film on the windshield, UVA and UVB rays get directly to the skin and over time, causes a lot of damage to the hands. Have you ever paid attention to people that drive a lot? I bet you can see that the hands are pretty aged compared to the real age.

We’ve seen many. That’s why we have to pay attention to the ways to protect ourselves from sun exposure.

The first thing of all, we have to protect our skin, and it’s not difficult to take care of the skin. We just need to follow some simple steps:

We all have to have at least one time of our life an experience to drink for a week 8 to 12 glasses of water a day. (not counting juices, coffee, and other drinks).
