I have a Skincare Routine, but My Skin Still Doesn’t Look Good! Is It Time For a Change?
This is the story: I have a skincare routine, but my skin still doesn’t look good! Is it time for a change?
If you know your skin type, you know that different seasons impact in changes to the skin.
Two things never change though, year after year. One is sunscreen. Daylight and UV rays are present during all seasons, regions, beach, city, mountain. The other thing is Skincare Routines. Regardless of the time of the year, skin is an organ, like any part of our body that needs attention. It’s like we need to clean up, brush the teeth and eat, every day.
We all have skincare routines, we all adapted one to ourselves. For some is 1 step, others 3 and there are ten (10) steps! – I wish I had time for those… :-)
The significant changes usually happen during winter and summer. While in the winter, the skin is dry needing more thickness on the moisturizer, during the summer probably the opposite and then a lightweight moisturizer will make more sense. As we age, the hormone changes, impacting on our skin condition as well.
The Question is:
Should I Change My Skincare Routine Then?
It’s recommended and healthy though to have different products on the pipeline, especially if you are one of the people that are using the same kind of products for years. There are new technologies, new formulations that could be more appropriate for your skin.
Some signs can prove that, and we are going to see them here, but first of all, consulting a dermatologist is the most important thing to do.
Excessive Oil in the skin or Excessive Dry Skin
One of the first signs, that your body manifest is one of the two extremes:
Dry Skin – Flakiness and cracked skin are the signs that could be caused by drying agents, such as alcohol, or too much acid components, like glycolic, hyaluronic acids and retinol. In those cases, check the concentrations, probably you should be using them fewer times during the week. Or try another formulation, could be a good call.
Oil Skin – People usually don’t know because it sounds contradictory, but when we use products that help to remove the oil of the skin, they actually make the skin to produce more oil. Wrong cleansers or exfoliating the skin excessively, lifts the skin’s natural oil, creating this natural reaction of the skin.
Breakouts are Another Sign That You Could Be Using The Wrong Skincare
In both situations, either excessive oil or dryness on the skin, we have a vulnerability for clogged pores, that combined with hormone changes, and bacterias create an open door for breakouts. It’s not rare to see though, breakouts just after changing products. The skin needs about two to three weeks to adapt to the new products. So before thinking that you possibly had made a mistake, check later, if the issue persists, then you know that most probably the product is causing the situation.
Allergy Reaction with Sun Exposure – Photosensitivity
It’s never a good idea to expose the skin to the sun without sunscreen. Besides the fact that it’s the number one factor for aging, sun exposure can cause allergic reactions, such as itchy eruptions on the skin. When using products with Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids or benzoyl peroxide, bare in mind that this can create extreme immediate photosensitivity. In these cases, probably use the products at night or switch them for more natural ingredients.
Allergic Rash on the Skin Stop Immediately
If that is the case when using a product for the first time. Stop immediately. There is a big chance that one of the ingredients of the formulation is causing you the allergic reaction. Pay attention if the components are paraben-free, sulfate-free. Artificial colors and perfumes are not very good signs in skincare products and are the most common ingredients to cause an allergic rash.
Stinging, Burning, Redness Sensation on the Skin, What to Do?
I know we would do anything to be beautiful right? Who has never felt a little (or some) discomfort in the name of beauty? Especially when using acids, like Glycolic. Depending on the concentration it can really burn and damage the skin. One of the alternatives in this case to do is to use a lower concentration – not necessarily the highest concentration, means effectiveness – or try to dilute the product with a moisturizer or water. If the problem persists, stop using the product.
Is Tight Skin Feeling A Sign Of Allergy?
No, it’s not a sign of allergy but is a sign that something is going wrong and could be the cleanser that could have an unbalanced ph, swiping away all the essential oils from the skin and cause large pores, wrinkles and excessive oil.
Flaky cream after applying on the skin – What does it Mean?
There might be a conflict between the product and the steps on your routine. It’s essential that we pay attention to the stages on our regimen, once, layers of products are being formed and layering them incorrectly, it’s a waste of time and money with zero benefits to the skin. The easiest way to understand the best sequence is: First the Cleansing (Cleanser, or Exfoliating, or Toner, or all of them in the sequence) Then a Treatment – Anti-Aging Serum, Or Acne, Brightening Treatment you are using, After treating is Moisturizing – That seals and protects the skin keeping the treatment acting, while hydrating the skin. Last but not least, Sunscreen for daylight.
What else to consider when it’s time for a change in our skincare products
One of the most important things to consider in the change is to pay attention to the ingredients and formulation.
Not necessarily using a top brand will deliver the results you want. OTC (Over the Counter Products) are manufactured with low levels of purity and concentration that may act for just a few days. Let me explain why. The purity is not able to penetrate into the deeper levels of the skin, where collagen and elastin are produced. It’s easily noticed that the allergic reactions we checked above are caused by non-bio-compatibility and paying attention that cutting-edge actives and natural ingredients play a fundamental role in skincare.
