How Blue Light (High-Energy Visible Light) is damaging your skin

How Blue Light (High-Energy Visible) HEV Light is damaging your skin and you didn’t know

With all the news about to protect yourself against sun exposure, one subject is trending – Blue Light, aka, HEV light (High-Energy Visible Light).

The thing is that you probably didn’t know that HEV light is damaging your skin.

And there are some essential things to know about before you panic.

You can take simple actions to protect yourself and your family.

What is HEV light?

High-Energy Visible (Blue light) in a light spectrum scheme, is the indigo light, which is the midway between Ultra-Violet (UV) light and Visible Light.

It’s the reason why we look at the sky, and it makes it blue.

And it’s emitted by the sun, and electronic devices such as TVs, computer screens and cell phones.

Can HEV light cause skin cancer?

Even though it’s emitted by the sun, as well as UVA & UVB rays, there’s not enough scientific proof that HEV Light causes cancer.

On the other hand, UVA & UVB – YES, there’s enough proof that it’s one of the main reasons for causing skin cancer.

It doesn’t mean that we don’t need to be careful about HEV light. It’s as harmful as UVA & UVB light in terms of skin damage.

It’s necessary to take the same precautions, once HEV light can penetrate farther than UVA, that means that the deeper layers of the skin are affected.

Causing more severe damage that eventually shows up as wrinkles, rough texture, and brown spots in the skin.

Why is Blue Light (HEV) not healthy for the skin?

The main reason is that the rays reach the deep layers of the skin, more than UVA Rays (see image).

Another study that came in 2017 proved that HEV light, causes as much skin damage as UVA & UVB, once it also triggers free-radical formation.

These free-radicals induce skin cells to produce enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, naturally produced in the deep layers of the skin.

Elastin and collagen are responsible for the firmness of the skin surface.

When these proteins break, the skin takes more time to recover, causing dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Are there any benefits from HEV light?

More than 50% of the HEV light comes from the sun, and it’s vital to our overall health and mood.

According to scientific studies, sunlight stimulates alertness, brings good mood, can improve memory.

This is good during the day, but when the sun goes down, and we are still in contact with Blue Light, emitted from TV’s, computer screens, and cell phones, this is affecting our lives.

A group of dermatologists proved on their practices that blue light could benefit acne. They say it killed the bacteria responsible for acne.

Harmful effects of HEV light for the eyes

The skin is not the only one affected by HEV light. Eyes could be severely compromised.

Recent years brought people of all ages to spend more time on cell phones, tablets, computers, and TVs.

With that said, an associated study between Harvard University and Paris Vision Institute, showed that HEV light contributes to the retinal cell death.

In other words, blindness called in the medical world as Macular Degeneration.

The same study proved that the time you’re spending in bed reading on your tablets is directly affecting your sleep.

That’s because the brain is triggered to stay up, not allowing you to reach the restorative sleep levels.

Reinforcing the message that HEV light, from the sun, is excellent during the day. Not at night.

No wonder that the number of complaints, on optometrist offices dramatically increased, from ocular pain and headaches, which modern medicine is calling it Digital Eye Strain or Computer Vision Syndrome.

Blurry night vision, constant headaches, and eyelids twitch are other symptoms of this new digital era.

Next-Generation Face Sunscreen

What can we do to protect ourselves from HEV light?

There are three simple actions we can take to be protected from HEV light.

  1. Turn on the “night mode” in your cell phone and tablet. Nowadays it’s possible to reduce the incidence of blue light from our cell-phones.
  2. Large sunglasses with a UV rating. The same thing for reading glasses. Technology allows us to have a coating that protects from HEV light.
  3. Broad-spectrum sunscreen. At least 30 SPF (Solar Protection Factor). And look for UVA/UVB & HEV Protection.

This reality shows us why 9 in 10 American women are buying face sunscreen like in the old days.

There is not much information available, as well as not enough products available in the market to fulfill our needs.

What products can we use to protect from skin sun damage?

First of all, one of the products is a face sunscreen.

X3 Primer Moisturizing SPF – It’s a tinted sunscreen, which means that it has a mineral base (Zinc Oxide), but different from another mineral sunscreen, this one has Transparent Zinc Oxide.

That means it won’t let Ghost Finish on your look.

A potent antioxidant, Lipochroman associated with other natural ingredients, proved to be beneficial to the skin as fighting free-radical damage from the sun.

Other relevant natural ingredients that are known to protect signs of photoaging, caused by HEV light, improving overall vitality and luminosity.

Last but not least, Medical-Grade firming peptides, derived from rice-protein, minimizing the lack of firmness of the skin.

Sunscreen for prevention and Moisturizer for correction
