Valuable Tips for Taking Care of Tattooed Skin

Valuable Tips for Taking Care of Tattooed Skin

Tattoos Are a Form of Art, And Skin Needs to Stay Healthy Too

Getting a tattoo is more common than ever. In the U.S., about 1 in 5 people have at least one.

But while tattoos have become mainstream, not everyone knows how to care for their tattooed skin properly.

If you want your ink to look great for years, and keep your skin healthy, here are some easy but essential tips.

This is the same advice I gave my friend Sabrina, who called me the other day to ask about getting her first tattoo.

What Exactly Is a Tattoo?

A tattoo is more than just a drawing on the skin.

It’s a medical procedure where ink is injected into the second layer of your skin, called the dermis, using tiny needles.

Because it breaks the skin barrier, it creates a wound, and like any wound, it needs time to heal.

Understand the Rules Before You Ink

Tattoo Regulations You Should Know

Almost every U.S. state has its own tattoo regulations. These laws may include:

  • Minimum age limits

  • Parental consent requirements for minors

  • Licensing and hygiene requirements for tattoo studios

To stay safe, choose a licensed professional.

The rise in infections, including serious concerns like Hepatitis C, is often linked to unlicensed or unsanitary tattooing.

So do your homework before deciding where and with whom to get inked.

Before You Get Inked

What to Check Before Booking Your Appointment

Here’s a quick checklist to follow:

  • Visit the studio in person. It should feel like a clean doctor’s office. Trust your senses — it should smell clean too.

  • Ask to see past work. Any professional artist will proudly show their portfolio.

  • Confirm their license. It should be clearly displayed. If not, ask.

  • Talk about safety practices. A real pro knows how to avoid spreading infections like HIV or hepatitis.

  • Know your skin. If you’ve ever had a reaction to hair dye, jewelry, or fragrance, you may be sensitive to tattoo ink, especially colored ones.

  • Double-check spelling and meaning. Especially if your tattoo includes foreign words or symbols. Your artist is there to create the design, not translate languages.

After the Tattoo Is Done

Tattoo Healing and Aftercare Matter Just as Much

Once the tattoo is finished, the real care begins. This step is critical to make sure your skin heals properly and your tattoo looks great for years.

What to Expect:

  • Skin may peel and scab. Do not pick at it.

  • It usually takes two full weeks to heal completely.

  • You’ll need to keep it clean and moisturized daily.

What to Avoid:

  • No sun exposure for two weeks

  • No baths, pools, or beaches

  • No scrubbing

  • No heavy workouts or sweating

Aftercare Routine:

  • Wash your tattoo 3 times a day with mild, unscented soap.

  • Gently pat dry with a clean, soft towel, no rubbing.

  • Apply a water-based moisturizer or antibacterial cream recommended by your artist.

  • Avoid plastic wraps unless advised by a professional.

After the healing period, keep your tattooed skin healthy long-term with:

  • Daily sunscreen with high SPF

  • Moisturizer to prevent dryness and fading

Choosing the Right Lotion for Tattooed Skin

What Skincare Ingredients to Avoid — And What to Look For

You may be tempted to use whatever you have at home — but hold on.

Avoid:

  • Petroleum-based products
These can clog pores and trap heat, which may lead to fading and slower healing.

Choose:

  • Water-based moisturizers
Gentle and hydrating without sealing the skin in an unhealthy way.

  • Formulas with natural ingredients and cutting-edge actives
These work with your skin, not against it.

At UFlawless, we always recommend products that are medical-grade and free from irritants. Our philosophy is about nourishing skin from the deepest layers up, and that applies to tattooed skin too.

Final Words of Advice

If something feels off, redness, irritation, swelling, or signs of infection, see a dermatologist right away.

And remember:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Keep your skin moisturized

  • Choose ingredients that respect your skin’s natural barrier

Enjoy your new ink, and protect the skin beneath it.
